Full Highlights: Real Timeline (6–10 Weeks) and Care Tips

If you like being talked through the process and actually learning how to keep your hair healthy, you’re my kind of person. Full highlights usually stay looking salon-fresh for about 6–10 weeks in Dallas, then you’ll start noticing subtle changes like warmth, dullness, or your blend not looking quite as crisp. Your hair’s porosity, how often you wash, and the Texas sun make a big difference, so I’ll give you a real timeline and a plan that fits your routine.
The 6–10 week timeline for full highlights (and what changes first)
Here’s the honest version. Most full highlights look their brightest and most “just done” for about 6–10 weeks. That doesn’t mean your hair suddenly looks bad at week 7. It means the little things start shifting, and those shifts add up.
Quick timeline: Minor fading often starts around week 4–6 and usually shows up as brassiness or less shine. Around week 6–8 is when a gloss or root-blend can make the whole look feel new again.
What makes your highlights last closer to 10 weeks
Hair that’s lower-porosity, gently handled, and not being heat-styled daily tends to hold tone longer. If you don’t shampoo every day and you’re consistent with conditioner and a mask, you usually stay brighter longer too.
What shortens it in Dallas
Dallas sun is no joke. Hot, humid summers plus outdoor time can push brassiness faster, and pool season adds chlorine into the mix. Hard water minerals can also make blondes look dull or slightly “coated, ” so summer aftercare often needs a little extra support compared to fall.
My aftercare plan to stretch your highlight tone past week 6
A lot of people tell me they felt nervous at first, then relaxed once I explained what I’m doing and why. I keep that same energy after your appointment too. If you want your full highlights to stay bright, the goal is simple: protect the cuticle, protect the tone, and don’t strip your hair every day.
- Wait 48 hours before your first shampoo if you can. It helps your color settle, especially if we toned.
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo and focus it on your scalp. Let the suds rinse through the ends instead of scrubbing them.
- Rinse cooler than you think you need to. Hot water swells the hair and lets tone slip out faster.
- Purple or violet shampoo 1 time a week for blondes that go warm. Leave it on for a short, controlled time, and always follow with conditioner. If you’re getting grey-ish or dull, back off.
- Add a weekly deep-conditioning mask. Bleached hair drinks moisture. When it’s dry, it grabs onto warmth and looks brassy quicker.
- Use a leave-in with UV protection if you’re outside a lot. Dallas sun can fade tone the same way it fades fabric.
- Heat styling: lower temp, always a protectant. High heat bakes out moisture and can shift tone warmer.
- If your water is hard, clarify strategically. A professional clarifying and remineralizing reset can bring back shine when your hair starts feeling coated.
“Great experience and results. Receiving countless compliments on my highlights.”

Brass after 2 weeks? It’s usually one of these 5 things
If your highlights go warm fast, it doesn’t always mean something went wrong. It usually means your hair is porous, your environment is intense, or your routine is stripping tone. Here are the most common culprits I see:
- Too much purple shampoo or leaving it on too long, which can make hair look dull or uneven.
- Hot tools without protection. Toner fades faster when hair’s getting cooked.
- Chlorine or heavy sun exposure, especially during Dallas summer weekends and pool days.
- Sulfates and frequent shampooing. Clean is good. Stripped is not.
- Mineral buildup from hard water. It can turn bright highlights flat and slightly warm.
If you’re dealing with brassiness at the 2-week mark, tell me what you’re using at home and how often you’re washing. I’ll point you toward a simple fix, and if you need it, a quick toning refresh gets you back to that clean, expensive blonde.
When I recommend a gloss at 6–8 weeks vs. a full refresh at 3–4 months
This is where you save money and keep your hair healthier. Highlights don’t have to be “all or nothing.” Most people do best on two tracks:
Gloss or toner refresh (around 6–8 weeks)
If your brightness is still there but the tone is shifting warm, a gloss refresh is the move. It brings back shine, cools brassiness, and makes the blend look intentional again without re-lightening the whole head.
Full highlight refresh (around 3–4 months)
This is for when your growth is changing the overall look, or you want maximum brightness again. A full highlight appointment is 180 minutes and runs $200. I pair it with professional shampoo and conditioning plus Olaplex for bond protection, because keeping hair strong matters as much as the color.
If you’re new to highlights and want to feel prepared, I wrote a guide on what to expect for first-time full highlights. It’s the same way I talk in the chair, clear and not intimidating.
Keeping your highlights bright in the Design District heat: my rebook rhythm
I’m big on being timely, thorough, and making sure you understand what’s happening with your hair. That’s why I like a simple maintenance plan you can actually stick to. If your schedule is packed, a gloss at 6–8 weeks keeps you looking fresh, and then a full highlight refresh at 3–4 months keeps the brightness consistent without overdoing it.
I’m in the Design District / West Dallas near Trinity Groves and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and I see a lot of people coming in from University Park, Highland Park, Uptown, Oak Cliff, Irving, and Farmers Branch for touch-ups and maintenance. If you’re spending time outside, commuting in the sun, or doing pool weekends, that 6–8 week toner check-in can be the difference between “still obsessed” and “why is it going warm already?”
If you want a plan, tell me two things: how often you wash and how warm you like your blonde. I’ll recommend the right timing so you’re not re-highlighting too soon and you’re not stretching it so long that you’re fighting brass every morning.
